The New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections promised in its manifesto among many other things, the establishment of One District, One Factory if elected to form the next government. True to their word, the NPP-Led Government upon assuming office, established the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives (SDI) to roll out the One District One Factory in fulfilment of its agenda to spur district level industrialization, create jobs and wealth at the local level.

The South African High commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Ms. Lulama Xingwana, visited the zone from Thursday 9th March 2017 to Friday 10th March 2017 at the invitation of SADA and the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC). The purpose of the tour was the exploration of investment opportunities in the zone that might be of interest to South African Investors. H.E Xingwana focused on opportunities in the following sectors; Agriculture and Agribusiness, Energy, Transportation, and Tourism and Culture.
