The Northern Savannah Ecological Zone , defined as the area north of the 8th parallel, constituting the regions of Northern, Upper East, Upper West and some parts of Brong Ahafo and Volta regions, is Ghana’s “breadbasket”. The Zone is the principal source of most of the nation’s rice, soy beans, maize, millet, sorghum, yam, tomatoes, cattle, sheep, goats and cotton to Ghana’s largest markets in the South, to Kumasi the capital of the Ashanti region, and to Accra, Ghana’s capital. Additionally there is significant trade between Ghana and its immediate neighbors
Burkina Faso to its North, Togo to its East, Côte d’Ivoire to its West and other West African countries.

North-south highway project is proposed in anticipation of the growing number of vehicle on the road in the next decades due to the increase in affordability in Ghana in general as well as the increase in the volume of goods movement within Ghana and from Ghana to Burkina Faso. While the existing north-south road is providing a good service at the moment, it may not be sufficient for cost effective and efficient traffic time management, safety and ride quality expectations. Significant progress in sub-Saharan Africa has been made in the last four decades. Life expectancy has increased by 10 years, and literacy has increased substantially. Despite these real increments, economies in sub-Saharan African countries have not grown enough to support increasing populations. A lack of basic infrastructure, health services, and education, as well as limited sources for saving and income generation are at the root of a lack of economic growth.
To end extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, it is critical to invest in productive resources, infrastructure, and human capital to enable poor people to gain economic, political and social power.
